Customer Review: interesting but not thorough
I also bought their guides for new mexico amd arizona, and really didin’t need this guide after all–it touches the high points in each state, but in western kansas, e.g., it didn’t
touch on anything.

Customer Review: My First Choice
While on the road (Las Vegas, Arizona and New Mexico) I reviewed three USA guides (Fodor’s, Frommer’s and Let’s Go) and, for those for whom money is not a primary issue, my first choice would be this guide.

Fodor’s layout is great. The guide took you through a city in an intuitive manner. For example, in the `Exploring Las Vegas’ section, instead of scattering the recommendations before you (as Frommer’s did), Fodor’s approached it from the point of you progressing down `the Strip’. Also, the guide only listed those sights (casinos) with “the most imaginative themes or attractive particulars.”

The recommendations for accommodations were all `top drawer’ and unique, but normally pricey. The restaurant and nightlife selections were great, always distinguishing and creative and worth the search to find. The maps in the guide did help, a bit, but this is a weak area that Fodor’s USA needs to work on ( Frommer’s USA has the best).

If you are a bit short on money, and cutting costs maters then check out `Let’s Go USA’. If you are not financially challenged, and want to experience the best while you are on the road, then this is a great one volume guide. Strongly recommend 4.5 stars.

In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. Four months later, his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter….

Customer Review: A good novel for advanturous types
Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer is a powerful piece of literature about a young man, Christopher McCandless, who abandons his possessions and goes into the wilderness of both the Western United States and Alaska in 1992. He wanted an adventure in the wilderness even if it meant certain demise. The book retraces his steps by starting out describing his death and then it goes back to all the people that met him along his journey while sometimes going back further to when he was a young man. The book pieces together his motivation from when he started out to when he was found dead in an abandon bus in the Alcslean wilderness.

When Christopher is hitchhiking in Alaska, he gets picked up by a truck driver. They talk and Alex says he is exploring the Alaskan Wilderness and that he only has a ten pound rice bag for food and nearly no navigational equipment. The truck driver offers to buy him some new gear, but McCandless refuses. While in the truck, Alex later revels that he hasn’t spoken to his family in two years. Alex also reveals that he has a hatred for modern society. The truck driver drops him off in the wilderness and he has to fend for himself with nearly no navigational equipment and little food. Three months later, McCandless is found dead in a bus. The book later goes back to all the people he got in touch with along his journey.

The book pieces together its information from a journal that he kept and letters he wrote to the people he met. I didn’t enjoy this particular writing style because every chapter would either discuss a different person or go back to his life when he was younger. This seemed very disjointed; however, it did pull you in to the investigation of what happened. Although it was interesting to hear how he touched people’s lives and to hear their stories, I felt that it was just a bunch of short stories put together. I also didn’t like how the book started out with his death. I would have liked it better if I figured that out later on in the book. Although it has some minor flaws, saying it was a bad book would be wrong. I enjoyed hearing about his travels hitchhiking around the country and how he ultimately makes it up to Alaska. I also enjoyed hearing about his life and why he gave up all his money, car, and other possessions to go out into the wild. The book is filled with adventure and excitement, and I recommend anyone to read this book. I will end with part of a letter Christopher sent to a man along his journey. “So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” (56-57)

Customer Review: A book review for into the wild
The national bestseller, Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer tells the true t=story of a daring boy who throws away his entire life to live alone in the wilderness. Christopher Johnson McCandless, otherwise known as Alex, graduated from Emory University with high honors and then abandoned his family and friends to take on a new life. Chris gave away all his movey to a donation and left his hometown to discover his new life. Chris traveled all over the United States only occasionally coming out of the wilderness and into civilization. He made many friends and acquaintances during his travels all of whom tell their stories of how they met Chris in Into the Wild. A few months after Chris Johnson McCandless sets off into Alaska, his body is discovered by a traveling couple. They find a note on an abandoned bus desperately asking for help. The note is signed by Chris. The couple is too nervous to explore the bus but when the forest ranger comes across the worried pair he bravely searches the bus. Chris McCandless’ body is found frozen to death in the back of the bus. Chris had already been dead for two months.

For the most part, this book was interesting and well written; however, some of the chapters were dry and unentertaining. There were few parts where I couldn’t put the book down. For example, Jon Krakauer tells other explorers unfortunate experiences which were not as attention-grabbing as Chris’s.

My largest complaint about Krakauer’s Into the Wild was that the story skipped around a lot and we were told some key details before others. For example, I do not like how we found out Chris McCandless’ destiny in the first chapter (and for some copies of the book, on the cover). It is not until later on when we realize McCandless’ motivation for leaving the civilized world.

In a way, the story is similar to the book The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls. In both book the characters choose to live a non-materilized life and they only kepp their absolutely essential possessions. They are both happy with their lifestyles. Both Christ and the parents in The Glass Castle intentionally dispose of their matierals and replace them with resrouces that they found and cannot live without.

Into the Wild is a book that forces the reader to reflect on their lifestyle and the way in which htey are living. Chris seemed happy during his entire journey which makes readers realize that they do not need material items to be happy. It also teaches people to take risks while still being precautious so that they do not end up in situations such as Chris’.

In the end, I give this book four stars, because while I believe that the story was tragic and heartbreaking, I think that the way it was told and the order in which it was told could have been better and more interesting. Other than the order however, I thought that Into the Wild was a good book that tells a sad yet inspiring story.

For those who want plenty of fresh air, without closing shades or blinds at night, these sleep masks offer that opportunity. Facing the ocean on the East Coast, as we do, we get the morning sun and reflections off the water. Without masks, the only way to deal with the early morning brightness, especially on those longest days of the year in June, has always been to close the shades or blinds. This means that we cannot take advantage of the freshness of the air and the bird sounds that make life off the beaten path so enjoyable.

These sleep masks do the trick. They fit well, and they do block out all the light. We can keep the windows and sliding doors completely open and enjoy the air. The masks consist of a layer of impermeable, man-made fabric with what feels like a heavy plastic liner between the layers. Washing them is a breeze–just wet them, rub with soap, and rinse in the a.m., and in less than an hour they are completely dry.

One mask can last for months, the only problem being the normal result of elastic that gets stretched and may need reinforcement where it joins the mask itself, not a problem for the first several months. One order of five masks can easily last a year.

We keep an extra supply of these on hand for guests, who love being able to enjoy the fresh air while not being disturbed by the brightness of a 5:30 a.m. sunrise. n Mary Whipple

The airline style sleep masks arrived very quickly, and it’s difficult to get the quantity for the price. They are a good cost and are very comfortable to wear. But, the problem is that due to the type of fabric that is used, after just a few uses, they begin to have an unpleasant odor. This is easily fixed by handwashing the mask every week or so.

Customer Review: Ambush on Route 66
OK, here we have 3 DVDs ca. 1994, 1995 and 2000. They are full of historical information, nostalgia and local color. Makes you want to load up the old station wagon and hit the (Mother) road. They are all well organized, East to West, and vary in content enough to be a great value at $17.99 to someone with an interest in such things.

Disc One is a fine ride. Disc Two rolls along nicely as well until you cross into California and then the ambush. At this point we are ushered into an admitted side trip detour to “the most intriguing of the new museums”, an alternate venue called Exotic World. Here we are given a “brief” tour through a burlesque museum complete with some old B&W photos of bare breasted strippers of days gone by. The tour is hosted by a remnant of the bygone era in an outfit that shows way too much geriatric real estate.

Disc Three is pretty much the same deal with the addition of some live shots of a striptease pageant “for those staunch road warriors lucky enough to be traveling this way in the first weekend in………”. Yeah right.

Mr. Wallis is obviously a very smart and talented man and I’m sure that in the name of artistic license it would be perfectly permissible to include such things in a documentary of of the History of Hedonism. But in this case these excerpts represent no positive addition to the presentation and are nothing more than a couple of piles of cow plop in the middle of the Mother Road.

I guess my main complaint that for us “non-staunch road warriors” there was no reference to this material anywhere on the DVDs or packaging. One might quip, “There’s nothing worse than you see on TV.” Well I don’t watch it either, because I know what to expect. Watch you step!

I can’t tell you what a lifesaver this blanket is. I live in Utah where the winters here can get pretty cold. It definately makes going outside and riding in the car easier to handle. I love it so much, I’m going to give my mother this for Christmas. She suffers from bad arthritis in her legs and feet which is a bad combination when the cold hits her. One of the things she loves, is heat. Even sometimes in the summer she prefers the heat in the car. This of course is not easy from my dad since he’s the complete opposite from my mother where he likes the cold. My parents often go on car trips for a few days to get away, and I can see where this may fit in because the heater from the car won’t be on so much so both my parents can be comfortable.

Customer Review: Awesome intro to China
I am planning a trip to China and have been trying to learn more about the people and the culture of China and found this to be an excellent source!! The discs contain 3 different episodes dealing with different regions of China. The first 2 were excellent and they interact with the locals and try local foods. They go beyond the big cities and into the heart of China and parts of the country most people will never see. I was a little disappointed with the third episode but all in all found it well worth watching if you are interested in China and Chinese culture today.

Customer Review: A very different culture
I rented this movie from Netflix, and only half of it worked. The southwest China half was fine, but the central China half froze my computer. I’m sure you will get a fully working dvd from Amazon, one that was not already viewed by dozens of people.

This is the second dvd I’ve seen starring Justine Shapiro. The first one was a visit to England, and I found that one ordinary and not particularly interesting. This is a different story. This is really an excellent show. Southwest China is much more interesting to learn about than England.

If you think Tennessee is country, you need to see southwest China. It makes Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas look like Las Vegas or Manhattan by comparison.

Justine mixes with the regular people. She rides on their sleeper trains and buses, and on horses and bikes. She eats their food, which includes dogs, snakes and frogs. She takes us to their markets.

After seeing this video, there’s one thing I didn’t get from the England video. I really like Justine Shapiro. She has guts, she’s independent, she’s sweet, she’s pretty.

She also takes us to big cities in China, and they are very interesting to see.

I found one part of the film disturbing. She has some health problems and goes to a medical center. She gets acupuncture. We see the doctor shove needles into her skin. We hear her say that she doesn’t know why she’s doing this. We do not hear her say that it did a bit of good, and I think she would have said that if it was worth anything.

I tried acupuncture myself, and it made me sweat a stream, and nearly pass out. It is powerful, and I suspect that the doctor put way too many needles into me, and that I’m ultra sensitive to it. When he saw me passing out, he whisked almost all the needles out of me with one sweep of his hand, and I had to lay down on my back for a half hour before I could drive home. Then he asked me to make an appointment for a second visit. That was one of the funniest suggestions I ever heard.

Customer Review: Different, and that’s a good thing
My husband and I stole away last autumn for a week in Florida and we had a wonderful time using Real Florida as a supplement to a Frommer’s guide. It was my first visit to Sanibel, but we will be back again some day. Fabulous in fall! This book offers a unique and very cool blend of budget-minded things and places that also lean toward romance. What a perfect combination. For me, the fact that it doesn’t include detailed maps isn’t an issue. Travel book maps are too small to be of much use anyway, and we always stop at Welcome Centers to get free Florida maps.

Customer Review: Not user friendly
I just received this book in the mail yesterday. I unwrapped it, and started flipping through it. The chapter headings are the places the author wishes to recommend that I visit. Ok, good. BUT WHAT USE IS A TRAVEL BOOK WITH NO FREAKING MAPS IN IT?

Travel books must be BROWSABLE. And to be browsable, travel books must have MAPS to show me where the stuff they are writing about is located. This book is strong on narrative and weak on illustrative graphics, to the point of unusability. If a future edition were to add some of this supportive material, I might be able to figure out if the book were any good.

Customer Review: Elegant wrap, very large!
I was very pleased with my Pashmina shawl. It is light weight, as expected, but very large so that it can be wrapped around a couple times to provide more warmth. I bought mine for a wedding and I think it will look very elegant. The delivery was very speedy and the color (lilac) came out as expected, slightly lighter than the swatch.

I purchased the celadon green shawl as a gift. The color was as more beautiful in person than it was on the screen. And the feel of it was sooo soft. Unfortunetly, I didn’t notice it was part silk until I received it and the person I was buying it for doesn’t wear silk. So I had to return it. If green was a good color for me I would have kept it for myself.
